Jimmy Abbas, PhD, explores bioengineering technology to improve life
for people with certain disabilities, along with Co-director Ranu Jung.
Motivated by the intellectual challenge, Abbas uses engineering technology
to develop systems that improve on the interface with the central nervous
system. His interests include rehabilitation engineering, functional
neuromuscular stimulation systems, neurophysiological function in spinal
cord injury, neural network control system design, deep-brain stimulation
in Parkinsons disease, biomedical applications of engineering
control systems, and neurophysiological systems modeling and simulation.
In addition, Abbas is director of clinical rehabilitation engineering
at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix and vice president
and co-founder of customKYnetics.
With a body of published work that includes peer-reviewed articles,
book chapters and conference papers, Abbas frequently is invited to
give seminars and other oral presentations. He is a recipient of many
honors and has been a reviewer for various funding agencies, journals
and conferences. Currently, he serves as treasurer of the International
Functional Electrical Stimulation Society.
Abbas received his BS in bioelectrical engineering from Brown University
and his MS and PhD in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve
University.
